When every search opens an unfamiliar website or your home page changes without permission, the cause may be a browser extension, changed search settings, notification permissions, unwanted software or—in some cases—malware.
Start by identifying the behavior
Does it happen in only one browser? Only on one computer? Only after clicking search results? If other devices on the same network are affected, the cause may involve network or DNS settings. Keeping notes makes diagnosis faster.
Review browser extensions and notification permissions
Look for extensions you do not recognize, recently changed search providers and sites allowed to send notifications. Disable unfamiliar extensions carefully, and remove suspicious notification permissions. Avoid installing another unverified “browser cleaner.”
Check account and device security
Do not enter passwords into pages reached through unexpected redirects. If you believe an account was compromised, change its password from a trusted device and enable appropriate multifactor authentication.
When professional cleanup makes sense
We can help assess browser settings, unwanted programs and potential malware, then explain whether repair or operating-system reinstallation is more appropriate. Learn more about Computer Hospital virus removal and fake virus warnings.
