Buying a Refurbished Computer in Houston: A Practical Checklist

A great price matters, but the right condition, specifications, compatibility, and support matter more.

Buying a refurbished computer can be a smart way to get a capable laptop or desktop without paying for a brand-new system. The catch: the word refurbished does not by itself tell you what was tested, replaced, or included. Compare the actual machine and the seller’s written terms.

Used, refurbished and open-box are not the same

A used computer may be resold in its existing condition. A refurbished computer is generally inspected and may be cleaned, repaired or reconfigured before resale. An open-box unit may have been returned with little use. Standards and grading labels differ between sellers, so ask what work was actually performed.

Seven questions to ask before purchasing

  1. What is the exact model and processor generation? A familiar brand name alone does not tell you the computer’s age or capabilities.
  2. How much RAM and what kind of storage? For many everyday Windows tasks, 16 GB RAM and an SSD are a comfortable target; demanding work may require more. Verify upgrades are possible if you expect future needs.
  3. Will it run a supported operating system? Do not assume a computer can officially run Windows 11. Check the exact model and Microsoft's compatibility requirements.
  4. What is its physical condition? Inspect the display, hinges, keyboard, ports, case, and charger. Ask about battery condition and expected runtime on laptops.
  5. Has old user data been removed? Ask about drive sanitization and whether the system has a clean, properly licensed operating-system installation. Documentation varies by seller.
  6. What comes in the box? Confirm charger, power cable and any needed accessories. For a desktop, establish whether a monitor, Wi-Fi adapter, keyboard or mouse is included.
  7. What are the actual warranty and return terms? Get the coverage, exclusions, duration and process in writing for that specific unit.

Match the computer to the job

UseWhat to prioritize
Email, web, video callsSupported OS, SSD, adequate RAM, functioning camera/microphone if needed
Office and remote work16 GB RAM as a useful starting point, multiple displays, ports and reliable connectivity
Student laptopBattery condition, weight, charger, keyboard and required school software
Photo, video or gamingApplication-specific CPU, GPU, RAM, storage and cooling requirements

Look beyond the listed price

A low price can be misleading if you need to buy a charger, replace a weak battery, add storage, purchase a monitor or pay for software. Compare the total ready-to-use cost against another refurbished computer and an appropriate new alternative.

Why inspecting a local computer can help

When shopping locally, you can ask questions about the exact computer and may be able to inspect its cosmetic condition before buying. Ask about available configurations and warranty terms rather than assuming every unit is identical.
