A spill can reach the keyboard, motherboard, battery connectors and storage. The safest first response is usually to stop the electrical activity, not to test whether the laptop survived.
What to do first
- Switch the laptop off if it is safe to do so.
- Disconnect the charger and accessories.
- Do not connect power or turn the machine on again.
- Leave disassembly of an internal battery to a trained technician.
- Arrange a professional evaluation and explain what was spilled and when.
What not to do
Avoid rice, hair dryers, heat guns and repeated power-on attempts. A laptop may look dry while conductive residue remains on connectors and circuit boards.
Can files be recovered?
Recovery options depend on the design of the device and where the liquid reached. Tell the technician if you have critical files before authorizing repair or reinstall work.
