Lithium-ion batteries can swell as they age or fail. Some signs are subtle: a trackpad stops clicking normally, the keyboard lifts, or the bottom cover no longer sits flat. Other batteries cause obvious bulging.
What the symptoms can tell you
Watch for a raised palm rest, uneven keyboard, trackpad movement, a case seam that opens, abnormal heat, a sweet or chemical odor, or a battery that changes shape. Not all swelling is easy to see from outside.

- Stop charging and using the device if swelling is suspected.
- If it is safe to do so, power the computer off and disconnect it from external power.
- Move it away from flammable materials without pressing on the battery or bending the case.
