5 Warning Signs of Hard Drive or SSD Failure

A failing storage drive can make a computer feel slow, but the bigger risk is losing irreplaceable documents, photographs, and business files. Mechanical hard drives (HDDs) and solid-state drives (SSDs) can both fail, sometimes with little warning.

1. Clicking, grinding, or repeated spin-up noises

Unusual mechanical sounds from an HDD can indicate physical trouble. SSDs have no moving parts, so they do not make these sounds. Stop unnecessary use of a noisy drive, especially if the files are important.

2. Frequent freezes or very slow file access

Files that suddenly take a long time to open, or a computer that freezes while accessing storage, can indicate drive trouble. These symptoms can also have other causes, so a proper assessment matters.

3. Files disappear, become corrupted, or won't open

Repeated read errors, damaged documents, or missing folders may signal a storage or file-system problem. Do not keep writing new files to a suspect drive.

4. The computer sometimes cannot find its boot drive

Messages such as “No boot device,” intermittent drive detection, or repeated startup repair loops can result from a failing drive, connection issue, or other hardware problem.

5. Health alerts or recurring disk errors

Some computers report S.M.A.R.T. warnings or storage-health alerts. These are worth acting on promptly, although a drive can fail without any warning at all.

What to do next

1. Assess the value of the data. If there is no reliable backup and the files are irreplaceable, stop using the drive.
2. Check existing backups from another working device, without writing to the suspect drive.
3. Get the storage assessed. The safest approach depends on whether the problem is physical, electronic, or logical.
4. Plan for replacement. Even when files can be recovered, an unreliable drive should not be trusted for ongoing storage.
